Tell us about Laken's artwork.

Laken’s artwork focuses mainly on charcoal portraiture. She is drawn to faces and expressions and spends a great deal of time studying detail, shading, and proportion. She aims to capture personality and emotion, not just a visual likeness.

Who or what inspires Laken to create?

Laken is inspired by people, their expressions, and the challenge of capturing emotion. Beyond her personal artwork, she contributes to the community by painting storefront windows around town and designing artwork for school, etc.

What is Laken's favorite art form?

Charcoal portrait drawing, though she is eager to expand her skills into other forms such as landscapes and mixed subjects. In addition, she explores leather craftsmanship and recently hand-sewed a backpack from start to finish. Learning from Nic Hankins on The Joy of Painting would be a perfect opportunity for her to grow artistically and explore new techniques.
