The painting is an interpretative portrait of queen Esther. There is thought behind every detail and decision from the secret love birds on the arm wrest, to the red poppy flowers representing sacrifice. Much thought and effort went into this painting. The viewer is challenged to find all the hidden details to piece the unknown story together. The usage of dull colors sets a mood of secrecy as well as despair on the other hand the dull colors allow the highlights from her royal jewels to shine.
